Every Day Faith: Day Eight (Gratitude)

Gratitude creates joy, not the other way around.

Gratitude Practice

Ephesians 5:20
“Giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Psalm 100:1-4
“Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing! Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name!

The root of joy is gratitude. Want to feel happier? Start giving thanks. True want breeds gratitude. Gratitude breeds joy. I think we can all agree that this has be shown and proven over and over enough.

“The joy we feel has little to do with the circumstances of our lives and everything to do with the focus of our lives.”

– Russel M. Nelson

Get out your journal/note app/whatever you have and start writing down what you’re grateful for. Every. Day. This gratitude practice will shape your attitude and outlook as you begin to see patterns of how you ARE provided for in everything. And it will soften your heart to see how blessed you are, how little we actually need, and how much evidence we have for joy!

I have been writing in journals since I was about 11 years old. I started writing with regularity (and the level of drama that only a passionate teenage girl can achieve) when I was 15 and have filled almost 30 journals in the past 20 years. I unintentionally kept a record of all the things I dreamed and hoped and asked for, AND the fulfillment thereof! Because it wasn't intentional I didn't always realize what was happening, but the retrospect realization taught me to keep track of what I'm needing/wanting/asking for to consciously record when it's fulfilled so that I have a history of how God gives me the desires of my heart.

What are you grateful for! Write it out! What are you hopeful for! Keep track of how kind the Lord is to you.

Side note: this is what the Old Testament book of Chronicles is for the Israelites.
