Clean Heart: "and forgive us our debts”
1 John 1:9
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”
“As far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.”
“But I’ve already been made clean.” That’s right. Jesus took all our junk. Past, present, and future. We don’t have to live with that business. Does that mean we never act a fool? That would be a huge NOPE for me. I was super unloving last weekend. So I told God about it in our prayer time. I asked for my spirit to be cleansed and renewed, and before I was even done asking for forgiveness it was forgotten. Because he is faithful and just to forgive.
“But I mess up too much all the time. It’s getting stupid.” I’ve noticed when we focus so hard on avoiding something we just keep tripping over it. You know that saying, “where attention goes energy flows”? That’s real life. Ballet analogy! When I’m dancing if I look down at the floor my energy instantly moves downward and I fall out of whatever I’m doing. If I keep my gaze up then I stay up. Same in faith. Keep your eyes up and focused on the good.
I’ve learned that almost every terrible behavior boils down to lack of love. So if you’re struggling with feeling like you’re just not hitting the mark over and over stop focus on the mess and focus on HOW MUCH you are loved by the Savior. Read those verses of love, and lift those hands in worship to let the Holy Spirit change you with his love!
Application: using the above scriptures is such a simple way to approach this part of your prayer life. "Create in me a clean heart, Lord." "You take all my junk and remove it as far as far is away. Every time." "You are faithful to forgive me when I admit to my wrongs and give them up."
I have a set of traits that I confess pretty much daily. Fear. Disbelief. Selfishness. We all know our weaknesses. I would also encourage ALL OF US to NOT OBSESS about these. Where attention goes, energy flows. Don't empower your yuck with attention. Confess it then focus on the good things; the fruit of the spirit. (Coming day 8!)
