Every Day Faith: Day Two (Hallowed)

Worship, Especially When Everything Sucks

· Every Day Faith

“Hallowed be your name.”

The first step in prayer is praise. Hallowed means to declare holy. Before we ask for help; worship. Even when you don’t feel like it; worship. Especially when you’re desperate and hurting and hopeless; worship. It’s then that you come into his presence and your heart can be melted by the Holy Spirit to be healed, to be loved, and to hear from your Daddy.

Where to start? God is SO STOKED ON US when we speak praise! Give him the honest thanks of your heart. Use the Psalms to guide you, too. You basically can’t look in Psalms without tripping over praise and worship of the Lord so really just get in there when you need inspiration Here is a powerful favorite re-written to speak directly to God. Using scripture to pray means we don't have to rely on our own understand to come up with that to say. (Psalm 3:5-6 "Lean not in your own understanding...")

Psalms 147:
“Praise the Lord! For it is good to sing praises to our God; for it is pleasant, and a song of praise is fitting. You, Lord, build up Jerusalem; you gather the outcasts of Israel. You heal the brokenhearted and bind up their wounds. You determine the number of the stars; you give to all of them their names. Great are you Lord, and abundant in power; your understanding is beyond measure. You, Lord, lift up the humble; you cast the wicked to the ground. Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving; make melody to our God on the lyre! You cover the heavens with clouds you prepare rain for the earth; you make grass grow on the hills. You give to the beasts their food, and to the young ravens that cry. You delight is not in the strength of the horse, nor is your pleasure in the legs of a man, but you, Lord, take pleasure in those who fear* you, in those who hope is in your steadfast love. Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem! Praise your God, O Zion! For you strengthens the bars of our gates; you bless our children within us. You makes peace in our borders; you fill us with the finest of the wheat. You send out your command to the earth; your word runs swiftly. You give snow like wool; you scatters frost like ashes. Your hurl down your crystals of ice like crumbs; who can stand before your cold? Your send out your word, and melts them; you make your wind blow and the waters flow. You declared his word to Jacob, your statutes and rules to Israel. You have not dealt thus with any other nation**; They do not know your rules. Praise the Lord!”

(*Biblical definition of the Fear of the Lord: “silent wonder, radical amazement, and affectionate awe at the infinite goodness of God”. – Brennan Manning)

(**Nation: the people of God; everyone who has accepted Jesus as their savior and leader.)

There are many studies proving the importance of saying someone’s name out loud to them. If God is the creator of words and IS words (Remember, John 1:1) then how must he BASK in hearing us speak his names? Cool, but isn’t his name God and we say that all the time? Yes, and there's more. Here is a list of all the names of God, their meaning, where they are first found, and how many times they’re used in scripture. Just reading through this list of his names is a practice in praise!

The most impactful thing I’ve learned through practice is that I’ve got to PRAISE HIM above all else, no matter who I am feeling, but ESPECIALLY when I don’t feel good. Choosing to worship when you don't feel like it is the most self-sacrificing, most glorifying thing we can choose to do, AND you DON'T have to feel bad about not wanting to. It's the fact that you CHOOSE to that delights God's heart!

This worship song by Hilllsong UNITED landed in my life just recently and made me weep. Because I was hurting. I was tired. I didn’t feel like I had any more strength or reason to keep believing God’s promises. These verses brought praise to my lips even when I hurt like hell.

“Take this feinted heart
Take these tainted hands
Wash me in your love
Come like grace again
Even when my strength is lost

I'll praise you
Even when I have no song
I'll praise you
Even when it's hard to find the words
Louder then I'll sing your praise
I will only sing your praise

Take this mountain weight
Take these ocean tears
Hold me through the trial
Come like hope again
Even when the fight seems lost

I'll praise you
Even when it hurts like hell
I'll praise you
Even when it makes no sense to sing
Louder then I'll sing your praise

And my heart burns only for you
You are all you are all I want
And my soul waits only for you
And I will sing till the morning has come

Lord my heart burns only for you
You are all you are all I want
And my soul waits only for you
And I will sing till the miracle comes

Even when the morning comes
I'll praise you
Even when the fight is won
I'll praise you
Even when my time on earth is done
Louder then I'll sing your praise
I will only sing your praise”

“Even When It Hurts” from “Empires” by Hillsong UNITED, 2015

Psalm 103:
"Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name

Bless the Lord, o my soul, and forget not his benefits

who forgives all your iniquity,

who deals all your diseases,

who redeems your life from the pit,

who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,

who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like eagle's."
